Ray Conniff (* 6. November 1916 in Attleboro, Massachusetts; † 12. Oktober 2002 in Escondido, Kalifornien) war ein US-amerikanischer Komponist, Arrangeur, Orchesterleiter und Posaunist.

Conniff entstammte einer musikalischen Familie. Das Arrangieren erlernte er durch einen Fernkurs. Seine musikalische Laufbahn startete er als Arrangeur und Posaunist in den 1930er Jahren in den damals bekanntesten Bigbands (u. a. bei Artie Shaw, Harry James und Bunny Berigan). Anfang der 1950er Jahre holte ihn der damalige Repertoirechef von Columbia Records in New York, Mitch Miller, als so genannten Staff Arranger ins Haus und ließ ihn die Musik der Gesangsstars des Labels, darunter Tony Bennett, Johnny Mathis, Johnnie Ray, Frankie Laine und Marty Robbins arrangieren. Heraus kamen auch in Deutschland bekannte Top-Hits wie z. B. "Just Walking In The Rain" und "Yes Tonight Josephine" für Johnnie Ray, "A White Sport Coat" für Marty Robbins, "Chances Are" für Johnny Mathis und "Moonlight Gambler" für Frankie Laine.

...Die für damalige Zeiten sehr ungewöhnlichen Arrangements bescherten ihm 1957 die Chance, eine eigene LP zu produzieren, deren Titelsong,"'S Wonderful" aus der Feder von George Gershwin, Zeit seiner Karriere die persönliche Erkennungsmelodie wurde. Conniffs Erfolgsrezept war schon damals sein unverwechselbarer "Sound", der sich zusammensetzte aus zwei Komponenten: einer durch starkes Echo verstärkten Rhythmusgruppe, in der die Gitarre meist parallel zum Schlagzeug eingesetzt wurde, sowie ein wortlos s(w)ingender Chor. Dieser wurde so eingesetzt, dass die Sängerinnen die Trompetentöne, die Sänger die Posaunen- und Saxofontöne mitsangen. Die Verschmelzung von Instrumenten und Stimmen gelang Conniff dabei so gut, dass der Hörer den Eindruck eines gemeinsamen Klangkörpers erhielt.
